Background of the Study

Persons with disabilities (PWDs) often face significant barriers to accessing healthcare, including physical, financial, and social obstacles. In many parts of the world, including Nigeria, healthcare systems have not been adequately equipped to meet the needs of PWDs, leaving them underserved and marginalized (United Nations [UN], 2024). For instance, physical barriers such as the lack of accessible healthcare facilities, inadequate transportation, and poorly designed healthcare infrastructure significantly impede PWDs from seeking timely medical attention (World Health Organization [WHO], 2023).

Zamfara State, located in northwestern Nigeria, has a substantial number of persons with disabilities. The state is predominantly rural, with limited healthcare facilities and a shortage of specialized healthcare providers. Persons with disabilities in Zamfara often encounter challenges not only in physical accessibility to healthcare centers but also in terms of financial barriers, as many lack the financial resources to pay for healthcare services (National Bureau of Statistics [NBS], 2023). Additionally, there is often a lack of awareness and understanding of the specific healthcare needs of PWDs among healthcare providers.

Despite the efforts to improve healthcare access in the state, persons with disabilities continue to face systemic barriers to equitable healthcare. This study will assess the healthcare accessibility challenges faced by PWDs in Zamfara State and propose recommendations for improving inclusivity in healthcare delivery.

Statement of the Problem

Persons with disabilities in Zamfara State face numerous challenges in accessing healthcare services due to physical, social, and financial barriers. Healthcare facilities are often not equipped with the necessary infrastructure to accommodate PWDs, such as ramps, elevators, and accessible medical equipment. Furthermore, the attitudes of healthcare providers toward PWDs may be influenced by stigmas and a lack of training, contributing to the underutilization of healthcare services by this group (Eze & Yusuf, 2024).

In addition to physical barriers, financial constraints prevent many persons with disabilities from accessing needed medical care. The absence of insurance programs tailored to PWDs and the lack of government subsidies for healthcare make it difficult for many PWDs to afford medical expenses (Okafor et al., 2024). These challenges have led to significant health inequities for persons with disabilities in Zamfara, and there is a need to assess the extent of these barriers and propose actionable solutions.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the healthcare accessibility challenges faced by persons with disabilities in Zamfara State.

2. To examine the physical, financial, and social barriers that impede healthcare access for PWDs in the state.

3. To recommend strategies for improving healthcare accessibility and inclusivity for persons with disabilities.

Research Questions

1. What are the main barriers to healthcare access for persons with disabilities in Zamfara State?

2. How do physical, financial, and social factors affect healthcare-seeking behavior among PWDs in Zamfara State?

3. What strategies can be implemented to improve healthcare accessibility for PWDs in the state?

Research Hypotheses

1. Persons with disabilities in Zamfara State face significant physical, financial, and social barriers to accessing healthcare services.

2. Lack of appropriate healthcare infrastructure and provider attitudes significantly limit healthcare access for PWDs.

3. Implementing inclusive healthcare policies and improving healthcare infrastructure will enhance healthcare access for PWDs in Zamfara State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on persons with disabilities in Zamfara State, assessing the barriers they face in accessing healthcare services and proposing potential solutions. It will consider both rural and urban areas within the state. Limitations may include the difficulty in obtaining data from individuals who may not have access to formal healthcare services or face mobility challenges.
